Folks who bought theirs on eBay or the like generally found themselves automatically out of warranty, no matter how recently the item was manufactured. Some folks didn't like the muffin fan or the ramp-up throttle when the direction button was used. Lionel would generally not acknowledge that the Cw had problems, and was very slow to correct them. By the same token, many operators did not read the Owner's Manual which could have saved them a good deal of grief.
Unfortunately, this was made even more problematic by unclear, inconsistent, incomplete and plain wrong instructions in the manual. The worst ones involve basic hook-up instructions and the "programmable fixed-voltage taps. In certain situations locomotives would not reverse correctly unless a small load, such as a lamp or two, was connected to track power. No one knows how many problems there actually were.
Some forumites posted their particular problem over and over again. Also many posters added repeatedly to the din even though they had no personal experience with the device. The same complaint posted five times is not the same as five complaints. In my opinion, the most revealing post about the CW was written by "donhradio" on the other major forum.
As of this date, it is still there, as is the one by TedB immediately following. Do an advanced search. Fill in the blocks for key word CW and author donhradio. That's all you need. The post is dated Jan 01, It, and the one following, say a mouthful.
Sorry, I can't seem to post a "clickable link. Many of the above deficiencies have been corrected by "ongoing product improvement" and the major revision in the CW in Most people seem happy with the new ones, although the 50 Hz and the "MTH" problems still exist, I believe.

The Erie went bankrupt around I believe. Fun times though. It should be in a sealed box with instructions. They should have checked it before shipping. Right, and if the green seal on the box is broken like in the photo it was at least opened if not used. I just sold 2 used ones on the forum for less than half the price of a new one. Neither one had scratches or loose parts. Those manufactured after were an upgraded model.
Just a heads up. Large dealers may be running low on the current version, but I honestly have no idea how many they routinely stock or how many units Lionel had left in stock to ship to large-volume dealers in recent weeks. I find the CW to be useful, but the quality and performance a little variable. Some fans are noisy for example.
