No version of windows supports 48 bit LBA out of the box. The registry hack is the same for or XP. Check with the motherboard or add-in host manufacturer for the latest BIOS and driver updates, for these types of controllers. Currently there are 3 options to remedy the Gigabyte barrier. Failure to implement the solutions will result in data loss when trying to access the hard disk beyond Gigabytes.
Installation Option 1: For drives attached to the primary or secondary channel on the motherboard controller, use Windows XP service pack 1 or newer or Windows service pack 3 or newer , and install MaxBlast 3, or Maxtor Big Drive Enabler. Windows XP and with the newest service packs can be used without additional hardware requirements. This option assumes you are attaching the hard drive to the primary or secondary motherboard controller.

If a BIOS update doesnt fix your problem there are two ways around it , 1 buy a controller card, 2 there are utilities from hdd manufactures that are supose to make your system see the whole hdd. I've never seen the bit problem with any fresh install of 2K or XP and I do do mean fresh no service packs or anything and they have both been able to use hdds to there full capacity that is over GB.
There is a patch if you need it t is on Microsofts website: 48bitLba. Thanks guys. Its working now! You guys were a great help. I know this to be a problem with windows, drives over GB I think are mapped as 48bit drives. Windows doesn't default to this so you will have to enable it manually.
